My old Eastside elementary school in Niles, Michigan is returning to life. Recently closed by a questionable school board decision it is now reopening as a magnet institution. Walking through the empty classrooms I photographed the frayed and well-displayed flags. K thru 6 memories at each location.

My new photobook “state fair” available at Blurb. Photo documentation of one of the last State Fairs held in Detroit, Michigan (2005) before funding ran out. Photographed with a Leica M6 on Fujichrome Velvia 100F 35 mm slide film, cross-processed into negatives.
Machine Empty…
No Place Like Home
Elvis and the Good Witch look on from Copyright Heaven to another blessed with golden hair and unlimited sales opportunities. Niles Apple Festival, 2010.
Detroit Painting
Nestled there in the pines off of Woodward Avenue, downtown Detroit, a lovely painting. Steps from the sidewalk, out of all context. Part of a DIA “out of home” display. Near the Fox Theater.
Fresh Cuts of Faux
Downtown carnival with a new prize offering: fresh hanging cuts of fury faux lions and tigers. Like fuzzy sides of meat in a butcher’s playland. Or something like that. (Shhh…they’re sleeping…)
International Bigtime Wrestling Selects
Finally, a few selects from last year’s International Bigtime Wrestling event in Mexicantown, Detroit. There was wonderful food, fake blood (no really), fantastic showmanship, and some menacing escaped convicts just hanging out with the kids. Originally posted about this back in July, 2009.
Dave Bennett Recording Session
Recently was invited by Ed Wolfrum to a Detroit recording session for Dave Bennett, clarinet phenom deluxe. If you like Benny Goodman (think Carnegie Hall 1938), you’ll be very surprised. CD from this session forthcoming. Go to www.davebennett.com for release and show information.
Taqueria Munoz
West Michigan. I got gasoline here years ago and now, caught in the cold of the lake effect snow belt, it is hot and spicy with tacos. (There’s a little food/snack shop down the road from this place that serves the migrant worker community. In the back is a cool case of small-bottle Cokes that are made with cane sugar.)
Bearing Gifts
All the shopping is done, carts abandoned, cars packed and off we go. Merry Christmas and the best for 2008.
